Well guys, we have a new show about motherhood and finding yourself after marriage to watch!! This is not a reality show, however a scripted comedy on BET starring our girl, Brandy Norwood. She is back with her very own sitcom that she produces, stars in and created, called Zoe Ever After. Zoe Moon is a separated woman, trying to piece together her business and life after splitting from her boxer husband Gemini. Zoe and Gemini, have one son, X, who’s in the third grade.
The opening scene shows Zoe on a date, might I add she looked fierce. Hair and outfits were definitely on point throughout the entire show. It wouldn’t be 3TheChicWay if we didn’t discuss style. The date however, didn’t end too well. You can blame the ex husband, son, and the date being a fan of her athlete ex for that.
We know immediately that infidelity was the cause of their split. Gemini is still getting calls and texts from females, yet doesn’t want to sign the divorce papers. It’s been over a year since she served him the papers, typical athlete storyline, wants his cake every which way he can get it.
Throughout the show, we are introduced to Zoe’s friends and employees at her namesake cosmetics line. She has her typical gay assistant, and best friend that she employs. These people will be her support system as she goes through this transition to divorcee.
The scene that really stole the show for me and many others on Twitter, was the parent teacher conference scene. The teacher casually drops hints that she can tell there’s something going on at home because X is acting out, with him “disappearing” a lot lately, doesn’t make it easier. Since she watches The Wire, she knows how to relate to a black family. (rolls eyes)
The lack of a father’s presence in a child’s life, especially an African-American child, can be detrimental. To make up for not living in the home, Gemini has been buying X stuff. In essence showering him with gadgets and new clothes to fill the void. We know towards the end, that it’s not working. He clearly blames his mother and is worried about who will take care of her, now that his father is out of the house. Children are way more perceptive than we give them credit for. He’s such a cutie pie as well, and a pretty good actor for such an emotional role.
I am interested to see how Zoe transitions. I mean she’s the ex wife of an athlete, who lives in an amazing Penthouse Loft in New York City, prancing around with her Celine bag and amazing wardrobe, and the owner of her own business. She’s not totally relatable to the average divorced mom with a child. But I think emotionally, we may be able to relate. She’s been lost in her marriage for so long, that now it’s her turn. She’s a woman trying to get back to her old self, and I think that is what speaks to me through Zoe.
How many of us put ourselves last for our families, put our dreams on hold for motherhood? Not to say that we need to be divorced to get that old thing back but it’s the everyday struggle for a few women I know, including myself.
All in all, I will watch again next week, to really see how I feel about the show. But I want Brandy to win, she has a major cable network backing her and she has a lot of creative control on this project. The laugh track, and exaggerated jokes on the part of her assistant can leave, but Brandy is A-1 as usual. Did you watch, tweet me your thoughts @3thechicway!
