A Day In The Life-Working Media Mom

The number one question I get is: “How do you do it all?”

This is usually how I am looking at my phone when these messages come through. It all looks so easy on social media especially with the little I share in my Instagram Stories, etc. I wanted to show what a typical day looks like when I have to commute from PA to NYC for work. If you’re new here, yes I live in Pennsylvania and work in the Big Apple. Catch up by reading this post.

A Day In The Life
3:26 AM lining up for the bus to New York

On this particular day, December 12, 2019, I had a 6:00 AM call time. What that means is, we have to be in the studio and control room by then to set up and have everything ready for that day’s production. I work on a couple of different shows for PBS. Today’s taping is for our political talk show, Firing Line. In order for me to get to work for 6 AM, I had to catch a 3:30 AM bus from my house to Port Authority, 42nd Street in the city. The bus ride is about two hours, depending on traffic.

I have never seen Times Square this empty!

I arrived in the city at about 5:28 AM. My job is a short walk away from the bus terminal, so I was definitely on time for work. Is being punctual important to you? I can count on one hand how many times I have been late to work, I HATE being late.

I forgot to document the temperature for that day. All I remember is, we had a snowstorm the day before in PA, and it was freezing! The kids were home with my husband who was off, and they had a snow day. Trust me, if I didn’t have to leave the house this day, I would have been cuddled up in bed right along with them.

6:34 AM, Lights, Camera, Action

The guest on this day was Nikki Haley. She is what you call a high-profile guest, given our current political climate. She is also the reason we had to shoot this episode at the butt-crack of dawn, she had other travel and appearances that day. This episode was also taped on a Thursday to be edited and delivered to air the next day. Needless to say, the pressure was on!

9:34 AM, Radio City Music Hall

Since we were only taping one guest that day, we wrapped at about 8:30 AM. Some days are more hectic than others. I have been on production shoots where we have to tape 10-12 episodes with over 20 guests in one day. I like to take advantage of my time in the city on days like this. Essentially, at 9:00 AM, people are now arriving to work and the city is beginning to buzz.

ZARA Fifth Avenue
10:11 AM, ZARA Fifth Avenue

I took a nice little walk through touristy Rockefeller Center, to get to ZARA and pick up some pieces I needed for Caleb’s birthday. ZARA is one of my fave stores, and yes I know fast fashion is bad. I just can’t resist their kid’s clothing. What are your fave places to shop for your kids?

Martz Bus Commute
11:01 AM, back to PA

I shop quickly because I enter the store knowing exactly what I want. There is a bit of research done beforehand. I rarely enter a store to just browse. I was in and out of ZARA and back to the bus station for an 11:00 bus back to PA. I definitely fell asleep on this ride, cuz GIRLLLLLLLLLLL!

Grocery Shopping at Walmart
1:12 PM, Walmart Grocery Shopping

My bus arrived around 1:00 PM. My husband and the kids picked me up and we headed to the grocery store. I crashed as soon as I walked into the house, after running our errands. When I woke up, I cooked dinner, probably did laundry and carried on with maintaining the house. Being a boy-mom can be a constant go-round of cleaning and tidying, because of well BOYS! Who can relate?

I hope you enjoyed reading this kind of post. I count my blessings every day, for the amazing support system I have in my life. In the boys’ life. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to live out my dreams. I don’t have any secret formula or special tricks, I just do what needs to be done. Yes, I sacrifice things. Yes, I am tired. But I am here. I am lifting all the Moms and Mother figures up in strength and prayer for the New Year!! Keep grinding, it will all be worth it. Thanks so much for reading, stay chic!
